What is the cause of green anxiety?

Written on Saturday, June 28th 2008

You've probably been there. Lining up your putt on the green and at the last second something happens, you know it happened but it's too late to stop it. And just like that you add another stroke to your golf game.

The disorder has been viewed as a psychological issue, prompted by performance anxiety that's so severe it makes putting nearly impossible in the most severe cases. But research carried out more recently suggests that it may also be caused by focal dystonia - a disorder characterized by involuntary, rapid muscle movements.

The root cause of this problem may actually be over-practicing. This may explain why some get relief and play successfully by changing their grip or by switching to a longer putter.
